Culture & Traditions
The Kachin Highlands encompass some of the most remote and biodiverse terrain in Southeast Asia, bordering Tibet, Yunnan, and the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The region is home to the Kachin, Lisu, Rawang, Lahu, and Naga peoples, each with distinct traditions and languages. British Baptist missionaries arrived in the 19th century and today most Kachin people practice Christianity alongside animist beliefs rooted in the nats — local spirit tradition — of the pre-Christian era.
The Manaw festival is the most spectacular cultural event in the north. Held in January around tall ceremonial poles decorated with hornbill feathers, the Manaw brings together thousands of Kachin people in traditional dress for days of communal dancing, music, and food. The ceremony is rooted in ancient animist ritual but has evolved into a major celebration of Kachin ethnic identity and pride.
Putao, the main gateway, sits at around 400 metres but the surrounding mountains reach over 5,000 metres at Hkakabo Razi — the highest peak in Southeast Asia. River valleys shelter rare wildlife including the red panda, clouded leopard, and Irrawaddy dolphins. The landscape is extraordinary and the logistics are demanding, making this a destination that genuinely rewards experienced wilderness travelers.
