About this destination
Bagan is Myanmar's great archaeological plain — a landscape of more than 2,000 surviving temples, pagodas, and monasteries spread across dusty fields along the Ayeyarwady River. Between the 9th and 13th centuries, Bagan was the capital of a powerful kingdom that built at extraordinary scale; today the plain feels like an open-air museum where every lane leads to brick stupas, mural-filled interiors, and quiet corners without tour buses.
Sunrise and sunset define the rhythm of a visit. Balloon flights in the dry season lift above the spires at dawn, while e-bikes and bicycles let you explore side tracks to smaller temples at your own pace. Climbing restrictions apply to some structures, but viewpoints like designated mounds and riverside terraces still deliver the classic golden-hour panorama.
Pair Bagan with Mount Popa or Mandalay for a fuller central Myanmar loop. Dry-season months from November to February offer the clearest light for photography and the most comfortable temperatures for cycling between sites.
