About this destination
Yangon is Myanmar's largest city and its most cosmopolitan gateway — a place where colonial-era architecture, Buddhist pagodas, Chinese tea houses, and South Asian street food share the same block. The downtown grid, laid out by the British in the 19th century, holds one of the highest concentrations of heritage buildings in Southeast Asia, many still in daily use as offices, apartments, and shops.
Shwedagon Pagoda dominates the skyline and the spiritual life of the city. Gilded from base to spire, it draws pilgrims at all hours; evening visits when the gold catches the last light are unforgettable. Beyond the pagoda, explore Bogyoke Market for crafts, wander the Strand quarter, and follow local recommendations into tea shops where conversation and small plates define the social rhythm.
Yangon works as a first or last stop on almost any itinerary. Allow at least two full days for the city itself before flying onward to Bagan, Inle, or the coast.
